Welcome to Portsmouth Cathedral, the ‘Cathedral of the Sea’. All our visitors, whatever their age are captured by the history of our building and enjoy learning about the people who have used it for over 800 years. By providing guided tours, craft activities, singing workshops and hosting myriad other themed events, we offer a memorable learning experience.
The Bishop Kenneth Room is our dedicated Education room in the North cloister. Workshop resources are kept here and there are facilities to give presentations and run small seminar groups here too.
School visits are welcome throughout the year and can be tailored to focus on different aspects of the National Curriculum, RE (Religious Education), History, Music, Art, Science and SMSC (Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural Education). When booking a visit, schools can select from the following workshops:-
Events in the Christian Calendar
(Advent, Christmas, Easter)
There is no charge to enter the Cathedral nor for a guided tour, but please book your visit with the Education team. We can check the diary and let you know if there are any special services on that may restrict what you can see/do here. We can also make sure a guide is available for your tour. Workshops are £1 per pupil attending. Why not become a member of our School Friends and receive a free or discounted workshop for your class? Click here to find out more…
Schools can liaise with us to agree the children’s learning outcomes. We can also create bespoke workshops to support and enhance the teaching of current topics in schools.
In response to changes in the National Curriculum this year, we’re also developing new ideas to engage primary and secondary schools, reaching out to Further Education students too. As the ‘Cathedral of the Sea’, we have a unique position and role in the city of Portsmouth and we look forward to sharing this with you.
Come along to our Twilight Sessions to see some of the activities we offer for your school visit. Use this as your pre-visit tour and to learn more about the Cathedral and how workshops can be tailored to meet your curriculum and your ideas. Meet the Education team here and share ideas with other teachers attending. Tea/Coffee & cake free! All sessions 4 – 5.30pm

We are grateful to The Friends of Portsmouth Cathedral who give generously to enable the children’s workshops to take place.
We also thank a huge number of volunteers who help prepare resources and support children during the activity days.
