Statement from Portsmouth Cathedral on Tier 4

Portsmouth has now moved into the newly created Tier 4, the highest level of restrictions. Communal public worship is still allowed, and our services will be continuing as planned with all the various coronavirus safety precautions already in place. These precautions include social distancing (all seats are at least 2m away from each other), compulsory face coverings inside the cathedral (except for those with a valid exemption), no congregational singing and hand sanitiser upon entry.

There are many ways to worship this Christmas, so please do not come to the cathedral if doing so causes you anxiety about your own health or if you or someone in your household has symptoms of coronavirus. We also strongly advise those in lower tier areas not to come into tier 4 to worship with us.

Many of the cathedral’s services are being broadcast online on our YouTube and Facebook pages. The Church of England’s Daily Hope telephone line provides access to services, music and prayers for those without internet access. Details of both of these are below.

If you do decide not to join us in person, please cancel your pre-booked spaces online. Doing this is straightforward and helps our planning. If you are without access to the internet, please call the cathedral offices on 023 9282 3300, 10am-3pm, Monday-Friday.

However you choose to celebrate the birth of Christ this year, know that we continue to pray for you and for God’s blessing and strength for all people at this difficult time.

Dean Anthony
