Midnight Mass to be broadcast live on BBC One from Portsmouth Cathedral.

Portsmouth Cathedral is delighted to announce that its Midnight Mass service on Christmas Eve will be broadcast live on BBC One. This is a great opportunity to share the joy and hope of the season with millions of viewers across the country and beyond. The service will feature traditional carols, readings, and prayers. The Dean of Portsmouth, The Very Revd Dr Anthony Cane, will introduce and lead the service with The Bishop of Portsmouth, The Rt Revd Dr Jonathan Frost, preaching.

Anthony Cane said: "We are honoured and excited to welcome the BBC to our Cathedral for this special service. We hope the broadcast will bring comfort and joy to all who watch it, as we celebrate the love of God seen in the infant Christ at this special time of year. All are invited to worship with us; as with our carol services, no special booking is required for Midnight Mass. We look forward to welcoming you to Portsmouth Cathedral this Christmas, whether you join us in person or on television.”

The Cathedral Choir which will feature both boy and girl choristers, will be directed by Dr David Price, which will include the well-loved carols O Little Town of Bethlehem, It Came Upon The Midnight Clear and Hark! The Herald Angels Sing. During the service Choristers will sing the new version of ‘The First Nowell’ written and composed by Bob Chilcott, marking its TV premiere. Members of The Band of His Majesty’s Royal Marines will also be accompanying the renowned Portsmouth Cathedral Choir for this service.

Those attending are required to arrive from 10:15pm and no later than 11:15pm. All are welcome to attend in person, and there is no need to book. You can also watch the service from the comfort of your home on BBC One or on iPlayer. Make sure to be following the Cathedral on social media for updates and behind-the-scenes glimpses.

Portsmouth Cathedral will also be hosting a number of other services throughout December, including Carol Services on 21, 22 and 23 December, Christingle, and Crib services. The Cathedral will also be hosting a variety of events, including festive film screenings featuring favourites such as Elf, The Muppet Christmas Carol and Home Alone.
