Music & Choirs
English Cathedrals uphold a unique and 1000 year old ministry of daily use of music within services.
Music is a truly international language and, as such, it is one of the Church’s most ancient forms of expression and worship of God. Music in Cathedrals strives to do this to a high standard and to use many differing traditions of music making.
At Portsmouth Cathedral you will find a thriving and diverse music programme. Our Cathedral Choir is made up of a team of 24 Boy Choristers and 22 Girl Choristers who share our daily singing duties alongside our team of Lay Clerks and Choral Scholars. Our Cathedral Consort (mixed adults) adds a further opportunity to our music team.
Our Cathedral Sing programme seeks to work with as many young people in our city and diocese to spread our passion for singing. Our newest projects ‘Choir Church’ in partnership with the Diocese of Portsmouth aims to found new congregations and new disciples through the power of music and singing at parishes across the region.
Music is at the heart of the Cathedral’s many cathedral and diocesan responsibilities and the Music Department plays as full a role as possible in this regard.
Please see the cathedral’s main section on Safeguarding and policies on this website here.
This spring, from 6 to 14 March 2026, the Festival of Early Music returns to Portsmouth Cathedral with a clear and confident message: early music is for everyone. The festival invites people of all ages and backgrounds to discover the colour, emotion and relevance of music from centuries past, in a programme designed to be welcoming, accessible and full of life.

At Portsmouth Cathedral, music is at the heart of our community. It uplifts, inspires and brings people together. Through our Sing Joyfully appeal, we aim to support young musicians by funding choral and organ scholarships, enabling outreach work and opening up opportunities for young voices to flourish. Now, thanks to The Big Give, your generosity can go twice as far!
This Sunday is designated nationally as Woman Composer Sunday, with music across both morning and evening services celebrating some fantastic composers!
Our Boy Choristers, Choral Scholars and Lay Clerks are just back from a brilliant tour to sing in Denmark. Two of our newest choristers, Theo and Thomas tell us what it was like to experience their first cathedral choir tour.

This week marks the end of the Choir Year. We give thanks for all that we've been able to achieve and thank a number of singers as they move on to new things...
