The Cathedral Guide or Steward Volunteer role at Portsmouth Cathedral involves welcoming and engaging with visitors from a wide range of backgrounds, helping them to enjoy and understand the cathedral’s history, worship, and community life. Volunteers act as the public face of the cathedral by offering a friendly welcome, answering questions, providing information, and supporting accessibility, while stewards help direct visitors and guides (after training) may also lead tours and interpret the building in an engaging way. Working alongside staff and other volunteers, the role is suited to confident, approachable individuals with strong communication skills, an interest in heritage, and a desire to share knowledge, whether as a steward or by progressing to guiding. Volunteering is flexible within the cathedral’s opening hours, with a minimum commitment of a few short sessions each month, and volunteers are expected to follow cathedral policies, including safeguarding and data protection, while supporting the cathedral’s wider mission as a welcoming Christian community.
