Coronavirus: Statement regarding new ‘lockdown’ restrictions in the UK
Following from this weekend’s announcement by the Prime Minister, Portsmouth Cathedral will continue to be open for individuals to come and pray and light candles, the broadcasting of on-line services, and funerals. Public worship, however, will not be possible from this Thursday, 5 November 2020, until Wednesday 2 December 2020.
We hope to be open from 10.00am to 2.00pm every day, and confirmation of this will be available on Portsmouth Cathedral’s website shortly.
The Dean of Portsmouth, The Very Reverend Dr Anthony Cane said, “It is with great sadness that we will not be able to welcome people to the Cathedral for public worship over the next month. Portsmouth Cathedral will still be open every day, however, and maintain a regular pattern of live streamed daily services. We will also continue to offer pastoral support to those in need, as we seek to be a beacon of light and hope in these uncertain times.”
Portsmouth Cathedral has been live streaming Morning and Evening Prayer and Compline daily as well as regular weekly Sunday services throughout the spring lockdown and beyond. We know how appreciated this online worship has been, and we will continue to bring ‘comfort and joy’ to the many who take solace in the Cathedral’s online services as we head towards Advent and Christmas.
Portsmouth Cathedral will continue to monitor regulations and guidance as it develops, and will be posting regular updates on our blog, as well as on the Cathedral’s Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram channels.
