Angels Campaign

Angels are woven into the very fabric of our cathedrals and are at the heart of the Christmas story. You’ll find them in our stained glass, carved into our stones, stitched into our kneelers, whittled into our roof bosses, fashioned in our reredoses, and placed atop Christmas trees and festive decorations. These heavenly messengers surround us, reminding us of the love, hope, and peace that Christ brings to the world.

This winter, we’re delighted to be part of a special campaign: Angels – A Winter Campaign.

Every day, an angel will be shared from one of our cathedrals on social media, showcasing the beauty and diversity of these sacred symbols. From Lichfield Cathedral’s medieval stone carving of the angel Gabriel, discovered during an archaeological survey in 2003, to the lovingly knitted woollen angels adorning Derby Cathedral this Christmas, each angel has a unique story to tell.

Here at Portsmouth Cathedral, we’re proud to join this celebration. Keep an eye out for our angels on the English Cathedrals social media channels, where we’ll be sharing one of our own alongside others from across the country. As the Christmas story reminds us, angels are God’s messengers, bringing tidings of joy and peace. They come alongside us to embody God’s love for everyone, declaring the hope that Christmas brings.

"Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares."
– Hebrews 13:2

We hope you’ll enjoy this campaign and feel inspired by the angels in our midst. Follow along and discover a new angel each morning on the English Cathedrals’ social media platforms, including their new Bluesky account. Don’t forget to look out for Portsmouth Cathedral’s angel, too!
