A reflection from Catherine Edenborough

This Sunday we celebrate Mothering Sunday, a day of joyful thanks for many and a day of regret or distress for others. Its original intention was for people to return to visit the mother church where they were baptised, but latterly it has become more about celebrating mothers, and for those who have had a poor experience of being mothered, have lost children or for various reasons have not been able to have children, it can be a very difficult day.  This year the images we see in the news at the moment bring it home even more – particularly Israeli and Palestinian parents mourning the loss of their children.

The gospel reading for this Sunday (Luke 2.33-35) is of Simeon telling Mary that Jesus is destined for the falling and rising of many in Israel and warns her that a sword will pierce her own heart – a sign of the pain and sorrow to come at Jesus’ crucifixion. It seems very fitting when we consider what is happening in the world and the pain and sorrow many mothers must be experiencing.

It feels all the more important for the church to be a place where there is room for all aspects of mothering and for all the feelings people experience in connection with Mothering Sunday.

What we can know and hold onto is that God’s love for us goes deep, like a mother’s love, but even more so.  God loves us in a way that holds and knows our pains and rejoices in our joys.  In the gospels of Matthew and Luke, we hear Jesus saying:“Jerusalem, Jerusalem [ ..] How often have I desired to gather your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing!”and in Isaiah 49, we hear: “Can a woman forget her nursing-child, or show no compassion for the child of her womb? Even these may forget, yet I will not forget you.See, I have inscribed you on the palms of my hands.” We can rest assured that God’s love never lets us go and can cope with whatever difficulties we might be going through.

So whatever our own feelings and experiences this Mothering Sunday, let’s make space for each other, let’s be sensitive to one another and let’s hold each other in this deep love of God.

An update from our Volunteer Co-ordinator, Rachael… It’s only 281 sleeps until the Christmas Fair!  Let’s make it the best fair with some serious forward planning.  You may think me mad but some stalls like Jam and Preserves rely on your creative skills throughout the year.
