A reflection from Catherine

Here we are again at Advent Sunday – the first Sunday in the church’s year and a new start.

There’s something about Advent that feels comfortingly familiar. We are finally into December and, depending on your level of organisation (!), thoughts begin to turn towards Christmas plans and preparations. We can look forward to our favourite carols, the tree going up and much more.

Familiarity can be both good and bad. There is comfort in the words of a song or Bible reading we know by heart. At the same time, if we have sung it year after year, we can go deaf to its true meaning.

At the Advent Course, which started last Tuesday, Anne Wright and Carole King encouraged us to consider a Bible passage that is very familiar to many of us - Mary’s song, the Magnificat – and to look at it as a revolutionary text (Luke 1.46-55). This passage that we say daily in evening prayer or hear sung by the choir tells of the works of God, and includes the words:

“He has shown strength with his arm;
    he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts.
He has brought down the powerful from their thrones,
    and lifted up the lowly;
he has filled the hungry with good things,
    and sent the rich away empty.”

At various times in recent history, the disadvantaged and poor have identified with these words and been inspired to believe that God can bring about change to their situation. It has stirred them to protest. In response, the governments of India, Guatemala and Argentina have all banned the Magnificat from being recited or displayed at different times because they felt it to be too subversive.

Dietrich Bonhoeffer, the Lutheran pastor and theologian executed by the Nazis, called the Magnificat: ‘the most passionate, the wildest, one might even say the most revolutionary Advent hymn ever sung’.

How easy it can be for us to become too comfortable and no longer see how radical the gospel is and what a topsy-turvy order of things it ushers in.

So, this Advent is our opportunity to look beyond the familiar words we sing or say, and grasp more of the revolutionary nature of what was about to happen in Christ’s coming. An opportunity too to reflect on our own part in responding to his radical call.

If you’d like to join us at the Advent Course, you are welcome. We will be looking this Tuesday at more poetry and at the personal experience of revolution. Details are here.

Praying for Peace

There are white ribbons available in the Welcome Area. Everyone is invited to take one to tie on one of the lower shoots of the tree outside the South doors of the Cathedral as a sign of the prayers we are offering for peace at this time. We are praying especially for peace in the Middle East between Israel/Gaza, and we continue to pray for Ukraine and other parts of our troubled world, as we prepare to celebrate again the birth of the Prince of Peace.

If you were kind enough to take raffle tickets to sell please don’t forget to return the money, stubs and unsold tickets in an envelope through the Cathedral House letter box.

Donations for Christmas Fair gratefully received from Monday 4 December.

Without lots of donations our Christmas Fair would not be able to raise much needed funds to support the mission and work of our Cathedral Church. Please drop off your donations to the Cloister from Monday morning onwards.
