The Speak Their Name Movement originated in Greater Manchester 2020, and then the torch was taken up by Yorkshire and the North East.
In early 2024 a plan was set in motion to start a project for Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. The suicide bereavement and suicide prevention and postvention communities were invited to take part and workshops were set up to enable people to participate, with the invitation to make a square to remember a loved one and speak their name.
As with the other speak their name projects we want this to be an ongoing and powerful artwork, touring public places around the region - to provoke conversations, to provide support and raise awareness about suicide loss and the profound effect it has on so many.
It's been estimated that for every person who tragically ends their life by suicide, a conservative estimate of 10-15 people are intimately affected - and up to 135 may be more distantly affected across family, friends and communities.
Suicide loss is traumatic, heartbreaking and can be isolating and stigmatising - and we want to bring some hope and healing to those who have lost a loved one and also provide some hope to those struggling themselves.
We will speak their name and we invite you to send care and compassion to all.
